Restaurant POS systems in Alaska: four questions that matter here

Alaska is four hours behind the East Coast all year. A support line that closes at 8 p.m. Eastern closes at 4 p.m. in Anchorage, before your dinner service starts. Of everything that makes buying a restaurant POS different here, the time difference is the easiest to overlook.

The software itself is fairly standard. Toast, Clover, Square and Quantic all take orders, send them to the kitchen, split checks and run end-of-day reports. What's different in Alaska comes down to four questions.

1. Who answers, and when?

Find out what time zone support works in and what their hours are in Alaska time. Then call the number on a Friday evening and see who picks up.

Our phone, (907) 290-8555, rings in Anchorage. The person who answers is often the person who installed your system.

2. What happens when a device dies?

Ground freight from the Lower 48 to Juneau or Bethel takes days. A week of handwritten tickets costs more than any monthly fee you'll save.

Ask every vendor where their nearest spare is. Ours are in Anchorage. With hardware care ($15 a month for the whole kit), a replacement goes out on a same-day flight before you send the broken unit back. The plan also covers accidental damage.

3. What happens when the internet drops?

Many Alaska communities have one internet provider and limited backup options. Ask whether the pin pad can still take cards offline. Ask who watches the network.

Our pin pads keep authorizing cards while the internet is out. Every install includes a UniFi gateway that we monitor from Anchorage, so we often see a problem before you call.

4. Can you pause when you're closed?

A lodge on the Kenai open May through September shouldn't pay for software all winter. Winter Freeze bills software for the seven months you're open and pauses it for five. When you reopen we turn the licenses back on and your menu is still there.

What you'll pay with us

Kit Price Typical fit
Countertop $1,800 Counter service, cafés, trucks
Handheld $1,000 Tableside, patios
Bar & Nightlife $2,600 Bars, breweries
Retail $2,300 Gift shop or bottle shop alongside

A full-service room usually starts with a Countertop kit and adds stations ($900) and handhelds ($600). Software is $99, $199 or $299 a month per location, month to month, with no early-termination fee. Processing is interchange plus 0.30% and 10¢, or cash discount (3.99% card fee, half-price hardware, first year of software free).

On cash discount, the card brands have rules about how the fee appears on the receipt. We'll explain how our program handles it. Confirm with your accountant that it fits your business.
